My line of the Betzold family got its start in the US in the mid-1850s when Georg Michael Betzold immigrated with his brother Friedrich from Germany. The brothers came from the small farming community of Künsbach in the Hohenlohe region of what is now the German state Baden-Württemberg. Künsbach is near the town of Kupferzell. The original spelling of our family name was Bezold.

Michael (as he was commonly known) settled in Dakota County, Minnesota, while Friedrich settled a little bit further south in neighboring Rice County, Minnesota. Michael married Henrietta Erb of Long Grove, Illinois, and together they raised 13 children on their farm in Castle Rock, Minnesota.
